WBB Routs Fitchburg State at Hat City Tournament
DANBURY, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team picked up 92-44 victory over Fitchburg State on Friday evening in the first day of the Hat City Tournament at Western Connecticut State University's Feldman Arena. The win snapped a five game losing streak and improved the Mariners record to 4-7 on the season. The Falcons dropped to 2-8, having now lost two games in a row.
Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led all scorers with 24 points on a perfect 11-11 shooting to go along with nine rebound, both game-high figures. Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) came off the bench to score 19 points, the most of her collegiate career, while Sam McKenna (Millbrook, N.Y.) added 17 points and five rebounds. Additionally, Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded seven steals to lead Mitchell.
The Mariners led wire to wire, capping a 9-0 run to begin the game on a three-pointer by McKenna, one of four shots from long range the senior made. The Mitchell lead only grew from there, as they led the Falcons 25-3 after the first quarter and 45-19 at halftime after Tatyana Gales (Upper Marlboro, Md.) turned a steal into a made layup as time expired.
Fitchburg played their best basketball in the third quarter, allowing the Mariners to only outscore them by three points in the frame, however the deficit was too large to overcome. Mitchell got back on track in the final stanza, outscoring the Falcons 22-3 to close the game.
The Mariners shot 45.6% from the floor, 30.8% from distance, and 44.8% from the free throw line. Led by Wiley, Mitchell was able to control the paint outrebounding the Falcons 52-32 and scoring 36 points in the paint. The Mariners were also able to force 30 turnovers, resulting in 46 subsequent points.
Rylie Harlow led Fitchburg with a team-best nine points, while Olivia Almeida, Stephanie Hart, and Ephemian Bailey each contributed seven points. Bailey grabbed five rebounds in the loss, the most of any Falcons player.
The Mariners (4-7) will return to action on Saturday, December 31st, facing SUNY Delhi at 1:00 pm in the second day of the Hat City Tournament hosted by Western Connecticut State University.
