WBB Holds On Against Becker
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team shook off the rust after an extended holiday layoff and came away with a 57-46 victory over Becker College on Saturday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Playing for the first time since December 13, the Mariners (5-4 overall, 2-0 NECC) forced 28 turnovers and shot 36 percent from the field to remain unbeaten in conference play. Senior Alix O'Neil led all scorers with 19 points and added a team-high nine rebounds to pace Mitchell. Haley Ooms led Becker (2-8 overall, 0-2 NECC) with 10 points and also handed out five assists.
Mitchell jumped out to an early 9-4 lead and never trailed in the first half. The Mariners led by as many as eight points in the stanza, but the Hawks narrowed the margin to 22-20 with 2:07 remaining on a basket by Heidi Miller. Mitchell sophomore Jordan Ringwood scored the final three points of the half, however, to give the Mariners a 25-20 lead at the intermission.
Becker came out strong to start the second half, scoring seven straight points to take its first lead at 27-25. Chelsea Joubert got things going with a three-pointer, and the Hawks took the lead on a pretty pass from Ooms to Tatiana Mojica for a layup in the paint.
Becker didn't relinquish the lead until the 11-minute mark, when Mitchell ripped off a 12-2 run to take control. O'Neil scored seven points during the stretch, and the Mariners led 44-36 following a free throw by sophomore Kaylee Cerruto with 6:31 to go.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 48-44 with 3:02 to play, but a jumper by senior Kailee Hyde and a three-pointer by classmate Allison Peck was enough to put the game away in the final minutes. Peck finished with 13 points and six steals while Cerruto chipped in with seven assists. Ringwood also pulled down eight rebounds—including six on the offensive glass—to help against Becker's big front court.
Becker shot 35 percent from the field but went only 1-for-11 from three-point range. Miller finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Mojica added six points and nine boards.
Mitchell returns to conference play at home against Wheelock College on Tuesday, January 11 at 3 p.m.
