
WBB Falls to Daniel Webster
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team
dropped a 60-45 decision to Daniel Webster College on Saturday
afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Vanessa Bosques scored 14 points and Kirsten Murphy added 12 points
and 10 rebounds as the Eagles (9-3 overall, 4-0 NECC) remained
undefeated in conference play. Sophomore Destiney Harris led
the Mariners (3-7 overall, 3-2 NECC) with a game-high 22 points on
10-of-12 shooting and added nine rebounds.
The Eagles led throughout the majority of the contest, but the
Mariners hung tough in the first half. Daniel Webster took its
biggest lead of the stanza at 24-15 on a jumper by Alycia Gervais
with 3:56 to go. Mitchell, however, rallied back with seven
straight points to cut it to 24-22 with 1:22 remaining. Gervais
then snapped the run with a jumper, and Bosques buried two free
throws with nine second to play in the half to give the Eagles a
28-22 lead at the break.
Daniel Webster turned up the defensive intensity in the second half
and quickly built the lead to double digits. Tonisha Tate scored 10
of her 11 points in the second half to pace the Eagles, who led by
as many as 17 in the late stages of the contest. After shooting
just 33 percent from the floor in the first half, the Eagles made
44 percent of their shots in the second half en route to 15-point
victory.
Harris was the only Mitchell player to score in double digits. The
Mariners shot just 31 percent for the game and were outrebounded by
a 55-36 margin.
Mitchell will next play at Connecticut College on Monday, January
18 at 3 p.m.
