Women’s Basketball Outlasts Mount Holyoke for First Win
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, outlasting Mount Holyoke College 57-52 in non-conference action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
Freshman Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) scored a collegiate career-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Mitchell offensive attack. Freshman forward N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX) notched her first collegiate double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) also turned in her best performance on the season, filling the stat sheet to the tune of 12 points, six assists, six steals, and three rebounds. Sophomore Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) added seven points and 10 rebounds in the win.
A back and forth contest which featured 13 lead changes saw the Mariners down by four points with 5:35 left in the game after Helena Robinson made a layup for the Lyons. N'Tai Teague answered with a layup of her own, was fouled, and converted the three-point play to trim the deficit to one point. Inonda Peterson followed that with a basket, giving Mitchell a lead at the 4:45 mark, which they would not relinquish.
Despite shooting just 29.2% from the floor, the Mariners forced 25 Mount Holyoke turnovers and outscored the Lyons 32-18 in the paint.
Helena Robinson led all scorers with 15 points. Robinson also pulled down eight rebounds, while Alex Twomey and Sofia Francisco chipped in 10 points apiece. Twomey finished with a double-double by adding 12 rebounds.
The Mariners (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) will return to play on Saturday, December 7, when they travel to Dean College for a non-conference matchup with their GNAC foes. The Lyons (0-5, 0-5 NEWMAC) will visit Anna Maria College on Tuesday, November 26.
