Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener Against Salve
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell 98-53 to Salve Regina University on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center in a non-conference clash to open to 2024-25 season.
Junior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Mariners, who fell behind early and were never able to recover. Beddoe shot 50% from three-point territory (4-8), while senior Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, MD) chipped in nine points, and freshman Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in her collegiate debuit. Fellow freshen N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX) and Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) each added five points for the Mariners.
The Seahawks drew first blood on a Briana Neary jumper 19 seconds into the game and led wire to wire, outscoring Mitchell 31-8 in the first quarter while building a 55-19 advantage by halftime. Neary was one of three Salve players to score in double-figures, netting 18 points on 8-10 shooting. Ashley Rourke added 16 points and six rebounds for the Seahawks, while Amanda Folan scored 15 points. Sofia Nearly narrowly missed a double-double, tallying seven points and eight rebounds in the win. 13 different players scored at least one point for Salve, who shot 50% from the floor and 42.3% from downtown.
The Mariners (0-1, 0-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they travel across town to battle Connecticut College on Friday, November 15, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Seahawks (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) return home to play Roger Williams University on Saturday, November 16.
