WBB Falls to Brandeis in Invitational Opener
WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 67-46 decision to Brandeis College on Friday evening in the opening round of the Brandeis Invitational at Red Auerbach Arena.
The Judges owned a 15-9 lead after one period as seven different players hit field goals. Brandeis, which outscored Mitchell 23-11 in the second quarter, did just enough in the second half to keep the Mariners at bay, outscoring the visitors 29-26 after the intermission. The Judges used a stifling defense that converted 28 Mitchell turnovers into 31 points, while the Mariners scored just four points on 17 Brandeis miscues.
The Judges put three players in double digits in scoring. Hannah Nicholson recorded her first career double-double with career highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Five of her 11 boards came on the offensive glass. Camila Casanueva also netted 12 points off the bench, hitting 4-of-7 overall and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Jillian Petrie reached double digits for the second time in as many games with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Allegra Jones was the only Mariner to reach double digits in scoring with 10 points. She needed 4-of-14 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers to get there. Ariana Carter led the visitors with seven rebounds (three offensive).
In the Invitational's second game, Eastern Nazarene College outlasted Western Connecticut State University by a 102-94 final. Mitchell (0-2 overall) will face WCSU in Saturday's consolation game at noon.
