WBB Falls to Albertus Magnus in Season Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team tipped off the 2016-17 season with an 81-40 loss to Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Liz Falcigno paced the Falcons (1-0 overall) with 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Olivia Bolden added a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Deja Ward and Kiki Epps also scored in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively, as Albertus shot 54 percent from the floor in the contest.
Jessica Shepherd led Mitchell with nine points. The Mariners (0-1 overall) shot just 21 percent from the floor and 11 percent from long range.
Falcigno scored the game's first five points to put the Falcons in front early, but the Mariners fought back to take a 9-8 lead on a bucket by Shepherd with 4:41 to go in the opening quarter. Albertus responded with a 14-2 run to close the stanza, with Falcigno fueling the stretch with a pair of treys.
The Falcons took control in the second quarter as the Mariners went cold on the offensive end. Mitchell made only one field goal in the final 7:49 of the half as Albertus built the lead to 41-19 by intermission.
Bolden was a force in the paint as the Falcons finished with a 50-37 edge on the glass. She pulled down eight of her team's 12 offensive rebounds to go with eight on the defensive end. Falcigno, who shot 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
Mitchell returns to action at the USJ Blue Jays Tip-Off Tournament on November 18-19. The Mariners will play Wellesley College in the opening round on Friday at 8 p.m.
