Wiley Nets 1,000th Point as WBB Falls to No. 23 Smith
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2021-22 season on Friday night, falling to 23rd-ranked Smith College by a 69-50 final in the opening round of the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament.
The Pioneers, who improved to 4-0, raced out to a 24-9 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back. Smith shot 48 percent for the game and was led by Amelia Clairmont's 13 points.
Amina Wiley scored 13 points to lead the Mariners, who dropped to 3-1 on the year. Wiley also netted her 1,000th career point on her final field goal of the contest, becoming just the fourth player in the school's Division III history to reach the milestone.
Smith came out firing on all cylinders to start the game. The Pioneers opened with an 11-2 run and went on to shoot 10-for-15 in the stanza. Mitchell trailed by 15 after the first 10 minutes and saw the margin inflate to 20 by intermission.
Though it was never close in the second half, Mitchell outscored Smith 16-4 in the fourth quarter to close things out. Wiley reached the milestone with an offensive rebound and putback with 2:44 remaining in the game. The senior forward needed only 61 career games to reach the mark.
Wiley also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as the Mariners recorded a 48-39 advantage on the glass. Le'Sandra Turner finished with eight points and five assists while Dede Stevenson added seven points and seven rebounds.
Mitchell will face Worcester State University in Saturday's consolation game at 2 p.m.
