Women’s Basketball Downed by Falcons
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell behind early and were unable to catch up to Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday evening, falling by a final of 83-68 in a GNAC showdown at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Falcons took their first lead 62 seconds into the contest on a layup by Diamond White and didn't look back, building a 26-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, which grew to 15 points by halftime. Early in the third stanza the Mariners were able to trim the deficit to 12 points when freshman Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) knocked down a three-pointer, but that was the closest they were able to make the game, as the Albertus lead grew as large as 24 points down the stretch.
Senior forward Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished one-point shy of her season-high, pouring in 36 points to go along with 15 rebounds and five assists, all game-high figures. The double-double was the 10th in 11 games on the season for Santos, who shot 59% from the floor and was 10-11 from the free-throw line. Fellow senior Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) added a season-high 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Peterson chipped in 10 points, and senior Lyliana Dany (Englewood, N.J.) had nine points, 12 rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Junior Jakara Murray-Leach paced the Falcons with 23 points and added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Senior Amanda Zdru netted 18 points, including six shots from beyond the arc, while junior Diamond White had 17 points and four assists for Albertus, who saw nine players up in the scoring column.
The two teams posted nearly identical shooting percentages, with Mitchell finishing 37% from the floor and Albertus 37.7%. The clear advantage the visiting squad held was in ball control, as the Falcons forced 24 turnovers, which led to 21 points, and gave the ball away just 12 times.
The Mariners (2-9, 0-3 GNAC) will look for their first conference victory of the season when they at Regis College on Saturday, January 13th, at 3:00 pm. The Falcons (12-3, 4-0 GNAC) jump back into GNAC play on Saturday, January 13th, when they travel to face Saint Joseph's College (ME).
