Blue Jays Fly Past Women’s Basketball
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell 74-57 to the University of Saint Joseph in a GNAC game played at the Yarnall Athletic Center on Wednesday evening. The Mariners fall to 0-7 in GNAC play with the loss, while the Blue Jays improved their record within the conference to 7-1.
Senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) poured in a game high 25 points for the Mariners, while adding two assists and two steals. Fellow senior Lyliana Daly (Englewood, N.J.) added a season-high 12 points, to go along with seven rebounds and four blocks.
Both teams traded baskets early on, and the Mariners went ahead 9-8 with 2:45 left in the opening quarter on a three-point basket by sophomore Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.). Taylor Vanboven knocked a free throw down seconds later, and this was followed by a layup from Natalia Zappone to give USJ an 11-9 edge, and the Blue Jays would lead the rest of the contest.
The Mariners hung around in the second stanza, and trailed by just seven points at half. The Blue Jays then came out of the locker room and used a commanding third frame to pull ahead, outscoring Mitchell by 11 points over the 10 minutes of play to increase their lead to 18.
Senior Jordan Ouellette was one of four Blue Jays to finish in double-figures scoring, chipping in 14 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Verboven and Maci Dorantes each added 12 for USJ, while Amanda Fudge posted 11 points, six assists, and three rebounds.
The Blue Jays shot an efficient 48.6% from the floor and limited the Mitchell shooters to just 35.8%. USJ also held a commanding advantage down low, outrebounds the Mariners 44-30, which in turn led to 50 points in the paint for the visitors.
The Mariners (2-13, 0-7 GNAC) will return to conference play on Saturday, January 27th, when they at Colby-Sawyer College in the first game of a GNAC doubleheader. USJ (16-3, 7-1 GNAC) will look for the seventh consecutive victory when they jump back into action on Tuesday, January 30th, with a home conference game against Dean College.
