WBB Stumbles at Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 68-53 decision at Newbury College on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Conference action at Pappas Gymnasium.
The Nighthawks set a program record for free throws made in a game, shooting 30-for-38 from the charity stripe in the win. Destiny Spears finished the night with a game-high 23 points and went 7-for-8 from the line while Savannah Olsen netted 19. Isabelle Pafford scored a career-high 10 points and fell one rebound shy of her first career double-double.
Mitchell's Jessica Shepherd recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, both team highs. Allegra Jones chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
An 11-4 start put Newbury ahead after the opening six minutes of play. The sides traded baskets in the final four minutes of the first quarter, resulting in an 18-10 Nighthawks lead. Olsen scored nine in the quarter.
The Mariners got within two at 18-16 after a 6-0 run in the opening three minutes of the second quarter. But, Newbury responded with a 15-3 run of its own to hold a 33-19 edge. The Nighthawks made 11 straight free throws at one point and led 37-24 at intermission. Spears finished the first half with 14 points.
The Nighthawks led by 20 after three quarters and fended off a run in the final stanza that got the Mariners within a dozen with five minutes to go. Newbury came away with its third victory in January and fourth in NECC play.
Mitchell (4-11 overall, 4-4 NECC) will next host Becker College on Saturday, January 21 at 1 p.m.
