Women's Hoops Keeps It Going at DWC
NASHUA, N.H. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team earned a 72-61 victory at Daniel Webster College on Tuesday night in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown.
Four players scored in double figures as the Mariners improved to 4-1 in league play. Jessica Shepherd shot 3-for-6 from long distance to pace Mitchell with 16 points. Ashleigh Beauford and Suzanne Vachon each netted season highs with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Allegra Jones came off the bench to add 11.
A three by Vachon sparked an 11-1 run that put Mitchell on top early. Beauford made three jumpers during the stretch to lead the charge, and the Mariners led 16-9 after the first period. Daniel Webster fought back in the second quarter and tied the score at 26-26, but Mitchell closed the half on a 7-2 run to lead 33-28 at the break.
The Eagles took their first lead since the opening possession following a layup by Kayla Free with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter. However, Jones buried a jumper in the closing seconds of the stanza to put the Mariners back on top, 47-46, heading into the final period.
Shepherd came up big for the Mariners in the fourth quarter. The Eagles cut the deficit to two at three different points over the final 10 minutes, and each time the Mitchell senior answered with a bucket. All 16 of her points came in the second half, and 11 came in the fourth quarter alone.
Mitchell outscored DWC 12-3 over the final 3:14 of the contest to secure the victory. A three by Shepherd gave the Mariners some breathing room, and a pair of buckets by Beauford provided the finishing touches.
Tiana Edwards and Kate McCormack also had solid outings for the Mariners. Edwards led the team with 10 rebounds while McCormack handed out a game-high nine assists.
Mitchell (4-8 overall) will next play at Wheelock College on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m.
