Women's Basketball Falls to Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. - Despite another monster game from sophomore Destiney
Harris, the Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a
65-54 decision at Newbury College on Saturday afternoon.
Harris finished with game highs of 24 points and 18 rebounds to
post her fourth straight double-double. Senior Jen Iglesias also
finished in double figures with 10 points as the Mariners dropped
to 7-10 overall and 7-4 in the NECC.
Ashley Montiero led three Nighthawks in double figures with 17
points. Catherine O'Connell added 16 points and 17 rebounds while
Jalisa Fields chipped in with 12 points and 12 boards. Newbury
improved to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the NECC.
Mitchell jumped out to an early advantage by scoring the game's
first 11 points. The Nighthawks answered with a 12-0 run of their
own sparked by a trey from Katelyn Mark six minutes into the
game. Spreading the ball around throughout much of the first half,
Newbury took a 28-18 lead into the locker room.
The Mariners mounted a valiant come-back attempt in the second half
behind the play of Harris, who netted 19 of her 24 points
over the final 20 minutes. However, it was not enough, as
Monteiro was red-hot from beyond the arc with five treys in the
contest.
Newbury's bench outscored Mitchell's by a 14-0 margin. The Mariners
shot just 30 percent from the floor and missed all 13 of their
three-point attempts.
Mitchell returns to action at home against Bay Path College on
Tuesday, February 9 at 7 p.m.
