HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Mitchell College baseball team locked up the second seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Baseball Tournament by sweeping a conference doubleheader against Elms College on Sunday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium.
The Mariners overcame an early deficit to rout the Blazers 16-8 in the opener, before rolling to a 15-2 victory in game number two.
The Mariners conclude the regular season with an overall record of 22-16, including a 13-3 mark in GNAC play. The Blazers finish their season at 10-22 with a 4-12 record within the conference.
Game 1 – Mitchell 16, Elms 8
Mitchell built an early 6–1 lead but saw Elms rally to go ahead 8–6 by the fifth inning. The Mariners responded with three runs in the seventh and exploded for five more in the eighth to seize control.
Sophomore Chase Donahue (Shirley, Mass.) led the Mariners at the plate, going 3-6 with four RBI, while sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) added four hits and three RBI.
Sophomore Ethan Chavez (New London, Conn.) picked up the win, tossing three and one third scoreless innings, and senior Jadon Canelli (Northford, Conn.) closed it out with a perfect ninth.
Freshman Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Tyler Powell (Middletown, Conn.) each chipped in three hits for Mitchell, who finished with 19 hits total.
AJ Cook had two hits in five at bats for the Blazers with a pair of triples, driving in five and scoring twice.
Game 2 – Mitchell 15, Elms 2 (8 Innings)
The Mariners pounded out 16 hits in the second game of the twin bill, led by Michael Ficocelli's 4-5 day with an RBI, while junior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) added three hits and drove in two. Freshman Ethan Petrowski (Ledyard, Conn.) also delivered a big three-run double in the sixth inning.
Starter Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) earned the win and improved to 7-2, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts, and Junior Jacob Quiles (Wallkill, N.Y.) closed out the final two frames. Mitchell capitalized on Elms' miscues, scoring 10 earned and five unearned runs.
