NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College women's basketball
team cruised to a 78-32 victory against visiting Mitchell
College in a cross-town matchup between New London schools
played at Luce Fieldhouse Monday afternoon.
Senior Rita Holak dumped in a game-high 14 points to go along with
eight rebounds for the hosts. Jenn Shinall added 11 points, six
rebounds, and seven assists for the Camels (8-7 overall). Emily
Cummings ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds for Connecticut
College, who held a decisive 63-to-27 advantage on the backboards
in the victory.
Junior guard Alix
O'Neil tallied eight points and nine rebounds for Mitchell (3-8
overall) while senior Jennifer Iglesias
chipped in with seven points. It was a sort of homecoming for
Bernadette Macca, Connecticut Class of 1995, who made her return to
Luce Fieldhouse as the head coach of the Mitchell program.
The Camels opened the game with a 12-2 run and never looked back.
Holak converted a pair of field goals in the post to key the early
scoring surge and Jenn Shinall knocked down a three with 16:10
remaining to close out the run. Later on in the half, the Camels
broke the game wide open with a lethal 22-0 run, taking a
commanding 45-12 lead on a Bradie Hutchinson jumper with 1:47
remaining.
The Camels held a 47-14 advantage at the half and continued to pull
away en route to the 78-32 win. Connecticut College scored 31
points off of Mariner turnovers.
Mitchell returns to action on Tuesday, January 19 against Southern
Vermont College at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Tip-off is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
