WBB Rebounds Against Johnson & Wales
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team suffered a 58-52 setback against Mitchell College in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Mitchell senior Alix O'Neil scored a game- and career-high 34 points and added 13 rebounds in the victory. Junior Bianca Young had seven points and six boards for the Mariners (3-3 overall) while sophomore Kaylee Cerruto grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and handed out five assists.
Johnson & Wales (1-4 overall) was led by Marina Millian who scored 21 points and added eight rebounds. Morgan Wilson also had 15 points, five boards and two assists in the loss for the Wildcats.
The two teams traded baskets early with the score tied 14-14 with 8:38 left in the first half. Mitchell then went on a 9-2 run, capped by a free throw by senior Kailee Hyde with 2:04 left in the half to take the 23-16 lead. The Mariners would take a 27-20 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.
Mitchell extended its lead in the second half and led by as many as 16 after a pair of free throws by O'Neil made the score 48-32. Johnson & Wales chipped away at the lead and pulled within four when a layup by Ayla Walter put the score at 56-52 with 33 ticks left on the clock. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however, as Mitchell held on for the 58-52 victory.
O'Neil shot 12-of-18 from the floor and went 10-of-14 from the free throw line to post the highest point total of her three-year career. It also marked the first time that she eclipsed the 30-point plateau in her career.
As a team, the Mariners shot 28 percent for the contest and made just one three-pointer in 19 attempts. Mitchell gained an advantage in two categories, outscoring the Wildcats 21-10 at the charity stripe and 13-0 in bench points. Sophomore Jordan Ringwood led all reserves with five points.
Mitchell will next open conference play on Saturday, December 11 against Southern Vermont College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
