Fast Start Propels WBB Over Fisher
BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team won their season-high fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night, using a dominant opening quarter to jump ahead and run away from Fisher College 67-51 in non-conference action played at Hellenic College.
The Mariners opened the game by outscoring Fisher 20-2 in first quarter and never looked back. By the time both teams made their way to the locker room for halftime, Mitchell held a 16-point advantage. This lead had grown to 30 points by the start of the final frame, and extended to as many as 32 points in the second half.
Freshman Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) came off the bench to score 14 points, going 5-8 from the floor and 3-6 from three, while Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) just missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Jermia Dumas (Stratford, Conn.) scored in double-figures off the bench, adding 11 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners, who shot 45.3% from the floor.
Mitchell dominated all evening down low, outrebounding the Falcons 48-34 and outscoring Fisher 36-16 in the paint. The Mariners also dished out 20 assists, nine more than Fisher, and got 32 points from the bench.
Madison Kelley poured in a game-high 25 points for the Falcons on 10-17 shooting. Kelley added nine rebounds and three assists for the home squad, while Naomi Mares tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Winners in 10 of their last 12 games, the Mariners (13-9 overall, 4-0 NECC) will return to conference play when they visit Lesley University on Saturday, February 11th, at 1:30 pm. Fisher College (1-19 overall), meanwhile, will next take the court on Saturday, February 11th, when they host Bryant & Stratton – Syracuse.
