BENNINGTON, Vt. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team stayed unbeaten in New England Collegiate Conference play with a 51-39 victory at Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Mariners, who picked up their third straight win, outscored SVC 16-5 in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-0 in NECC action. The trio of Kelsey Hernandez, Amina Wiley and Le'Sandra Turner led the way. Hernandez finished with a game-high 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Wiley and Turner each turned in double-doubles, the former with 16 points and 12 boards and the latter with 13 points and a game-high 13 caroms.
Liv Pressley was the only Mountaineer in double figures with 10 points. Maddy Main supplied six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Mitchell got off to a slow start and trailed 15-7 after one period. The Mariners flipped the script in the second quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers 13-7 to trail by just two at the break.
The lead changed hands five times in the third quarter, with the final switch coming on a three by Hernandez at the end of the period that left the Mariners with a 35-34 lead with 10 minutes to go. Mitchell then scored the first 14 points of the final quarter to seal the win. Southern Vermont went over eight minutes with a point and recorded just one field goal in the stanza.
Mitchell (8-5 overall) will next host Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, January 15 at 6 p.m.
