NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered a 74-46 setback against Saint Joseph College in non-conference action on Thursday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Saint Joseph (5-1 overall) shot 42 percent from the floor and forced 26 turnovers en route to its fourth straight victory. Chelsea Alves led three Blue Jays in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Devon Diliberto and Natalie Mastarreno added 10 points apiece while Mary Hyde pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Mitchell (2-3 overall), which shot just under 30 percent for the game, was led by 12 points from sophomore Kaylee Cerruto. Junior Bianca Young added six points and a team-high eight rebounds to help the Mariners' cause.
Mitchell struck first behind a three-pointer from Cerruto and led for the opening minutes of the contest. Trailing by three, Saint Joseph countered with 11 straight points to vault into the lead and never looked back. Diliberto scored the final five points during the stretch that left the Blue Jays with a 13-5 lead with 14:50 to go in the half.
Saint Joseph led by as many as 23 points in the first half and took a 44-23 advantage into the locker room at the break. Alves led the charge with 13 points in the stanza, contributing to a 27-0 advantage in bench points for the Blue Jays.
Neither team shot as well in the second half, though Saint Joseph increased its lead to as many as 35 points. The Blue Jays finished with a 42-18 edge in points in the paint and saw their bench outscore Mitchell's by a 46-7 margin.
Mitchell will next play at Johnson & Wales University on Saturday, December 4 at 1 p.m.
