Third-Quarter Push Not Enough as WBB Falls to Trinity
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 62-53 decision to visiting Trinity College on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Mackenzie Griffin posted game highs of 17 points, 14 rebounds and five steals to lead the Bantams (7-1 overall). Christina Raiti also finished in double figures with 12 points while Alexa Menard added nine points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Savannah Boyle shot 4-for-6 from three-point range and netted a season-high 15 points to pace the Mariners (1-4 overall). Diamond Thomas chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds while Amanda Garcia contributed eight points and seven boards.
Trinity kept Mitchell to single digits in each of the first two quarters to build a 31-18 lead by halftime. The Bantams took their first double-digit lead with 3:54 to go before intermission as Aubree Udell rebounded her own miss and found Erin Cunningham for an open jumper in the lane. The lead expanded to 15 in the closing minute of the half before Mitchell's Jessica Shepherd tacked on a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.
The Bantams kept a comfortable lead for the first seven minutes of the third quarter, though a late flurry brought the Mariners right back into the game. A layup by Courtney Erickson gave Trinity its largest lead of the night at 40-23 with 2:54 remaining in the stanza, but Mitchell responded with a 12-0 run to pull within five by quarter's end. Boyle and Lehayla Cruz each buried three-balls during the stretch while Suzanne Vachon completed an old-fashioned three-point play.
Trinity began the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Udell and a jumper by Menard to seize back momentum. Mitchell later got within six points following a jumper by Garcia with 6:45 to play, but the Mariners came up empty on their next four possessions as the Bantams built the lead back to double digits. Trinity sealed the win by going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 56 seconds and shot 80 percent from the line for the game.
Mitchell will close out the fall semester with a road contest at Nichols College on Thursday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m. Trinity will next host Gordon College on Saturday, December 12 at 1 p.m.
