PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team saw their record drop to 0-2 in conference play after falling 82-57 to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon in a GNAC game played at the Wildcat Center.
Freshman Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) paced the Mariners on offense by pouring in a collegiate career-high of 20 points, and also added four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket. R.I.) continued her strong senior campaign by recording her ninth double-double in 10 games, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals, while fellow senior Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) added nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
After the two teams traded baskets early, the Wildcats jumped ahead 4-2 when Mikayla Caruso converted a layup just under two minutes into the game. JWU maintained their lead for the remainder of the contest, holding a three-point edge after the opening quarter before pulling away by outscoring the Mariners 16-6 in the second stanza.
The Mariners were unable to find much rhythm on offense, turning in their poorest shooting performance of the season, finishing just 21.3% from the floor while making just five of 29 baskets from three-point territory. Meanwhile, the Wildcats shot 45.7% overall and 46.2% from long range, while dishing out 25 assists to just four for the visiting Mariners. JWU also used size to their advantage, outrebounding Mitchell 48-41, which in turn led to 36 points in the paint. Additionally, the Wildcats received a significant contribution from their bench, who scored 37 of their 82 points.
Sarah Wisniewski scored a team-high 18 points for JWU, while Mikayla Caruso chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, and Jennell Martin added 15 points off the bench. Peyton Oliver grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the win, as 11 players found their way into the scoring column for the home squad.
