Baseball Slugs Their Way Past Bulldogs
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team pounded out 17 hits and scored 18 runs on Sunday afternoon, routing Dean College, 18-2, in Great Northeast Athletic Action (GNAC) action at Alumni Field.
Freshmen Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) and Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) had three hits apiece for the Mariners. Dennis scored four runs, Alaimo belted a grand slam, and junior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) went 2-4 with four RBI and four runs scored.
After the two squads traded runs in the first inning, the Mariners broke out for five runs in the top of the second, fueled by an RBI double off the bat of Adam Vartanian, a bases loaded walk by Nicholas Bracale, and a sacrifice fly by Michael Ficocelli. Mitchell tacked on two more runs in the fourth, as Michael Gajda and Chas Terni Jr. collected RBI singles, before adding another run in the fifth when Kenneth Miller Jr. drove home Bracale with a run scoring single, making it an 8-1 ballgame.
The Bulldogs scraped across a run in the sixth, but the Mariners punched back in a big way, plating nine runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Braiden Alaimo.
Sophomore Joshua Scamman (Rochester, N.H.) tossed three innings of one-run ball to pick up the win. Senior Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, Conn.) worked three innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen.
Ryan Secovich was 2-2 with a pair of runs scored for the Bulldogs. Nick Swain shouldered the loss after allowing six runs in one and two third innings.
Winners of four straight, the Mariners (15-13, 7-1 GNAC) pause conference play for a midweek non-league road game on Wednesday, April 9, at Keene State College. The Bulldogs (6-17, 3-5 GNAC) play next on Tuesday, April 8, when they travel for a game against Bates College.
