Women’s Basketball Stumbles against Pilgrims
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team was defeated 75-44 by New England College on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Freshman Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) and senior Kyrsten Lucas each scored a team-high nine points for the Mariners, while senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) and N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX) netted seven points apiece.
The two teams traded buckets early on, and Mitchell went ahead 7-4 on a free throw by Jordyn Streitmatter with 6:54 remaining in the opening quarter. Kaira Creary answered with a basket from beyond the arc to knot the score, and from there the Pilgrims proceeded to outscore the Mariners 7-2 to close the stanza. NEC further established control by outscoring Mitchell 21-14 in the second frame to lead by 12 points at halftime. An 18-7 third quarter in favor of the visiting squad pushed the game out of reach, as the Pilgrims shot 47.7% from the floor and outrebounded Mitchell 55-29.
Camryn Lewis led all scorers with a 19 point, 17 rebound double-double off the bench. Gabriella Matlock chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The Mariners (2-14, 0-10 GNAC) play next on Wednesday, February 12, when they visit Dean College for a GNAC showdown. The Pilgrims (10-11, 4-6 GNAC) will look for the fourth consecutive win when they return to the court at Norwich University on Wednesday, February 12.
