Women’s Basketball Defeated by No. 4 Smith
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday evening, falling to No. 4 Smith College 93-52 in the first game of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament hosted by UMass Dartmouth.
The Mariners came out of the gate strong and led 6-5 when freshman Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) knocked down a jump shot two minutes into the contest. Smith would answer a minute later when Sofia Rosa converted on a layup, and the Pioneers would pull away from there, outscoring the Mariners by seven points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second frame, building a 43-25 edge at the intermission.
The Mariners chipped away and would come as close as 14 with 6:54 on the clock when senior Lyliana Daly (Englewood, N.J.) made a layup, but Smith responded with a 10-0 run to go up 58-34 when Hannah Martin's nailed a three-pointer.
Senior Jermia Dumas (Bridgeport, Conn.) paced the Mariners with a game-high 23 points. Dumas added five rebounds, one assist, and one steal, and is off to a hot start, averaging 24.5 points on 57.6% shooting over Mitchell's first two games of the season. Fellow senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) also finished in double-figures scoring, notching her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) chipped in 10 points and three rebounds for the Mariners.
Selam Maher and Sofia Rosa poured in 17 points apiece to lead five Smith players who scored in double-figures. Jessie Ruffner recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the win for the Pioneers.
While Smith shot 51.5% from the floor, the Mariners shot just 33.9% overall, 33.9% from three, and 57.1% from the free throw line. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle, 42-28, and handed out 26 assists to just nine for Mitchell. The Mariners also turned the ball over 22 times, which led to 29 points off turnovers by Smith.
The Mariners (1-1, 0-0 GNAC) will jump right back into action on Sunday, November 19th, when they face non-conference opponent Emerson College at 12:00 pm in the final day of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament hosted by UMass Dartmouth. Smith (3-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) returns to play on Sunday, November 19th, squaring off against the host Corsairs at 2:00 pm.
