WBB Falls to ENC
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team lost its regular season rubber match against Eastern Nazarene College by a 73-64 final on Wednesday night in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Sydni Oviatt scored 21 points on 8-for-18 shooting to lead the Lions, who improved to 13-8 overall and secured a share of the NECC regular season title at 5-1. Alondra Jimenez (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) finished with 14 points, nine assists and four steals, and Sophia Torres came off the bench to supply 10 points and six boards.
Amina Wiley led all scorers with 23 points and also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for Mitchell, which dropped to 9-13 overall (1-4 NECC). Dede Stevenson tacked on 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Yasmine Santos netted 11 points and fell one rebound shy of a double-double.
The first half featured six ties and six lead changes as neither side could build a sizable advantage. Mitchell took an 18-16 lead into the second quarter, but the game remained tight. ENC pulled in front late courtesy of 9-0 run in the final 1:43 of the half to lead 41-36 at the break.
Jimenez's 10 points led the Lions at intermission. The ENC bench also outscored Mitchell's to the tune of 12-0. Stevenson and Wiley scored 11 points apiece to keep the Mariners close.
The visitors extended the margin in the third period, going up by double digits for the first time on a jumper by Jimenez midway through the stanza. ENC outscored Mitchell 21-11 in the quarter and led 62-47 heading into the fourth.
Mitchell made up some of the deficit in the final period but never got closer than eight. Oviatt scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help the Lions secure the victory.
Mitchell wraps up regular season play with a home game against Lesley University on Saturday, February 19 at 1 p.m.
