WBB Picks Up Road Win at Lasell
NEWTON, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team held on for a 77-75 victory over Lasell College on Thursday night in a non-conference showdown at the Lasell Athletic Center.
Amina Wiley, who led all scorers with a career-high 30 points, scored the go-ahead basket with 2.3 seconds remaining as the Mariners evened their record at 3-3 on the year. She shot 13-for-21 from the floor and also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to notch her fifth double-double of the season.
Joining Wiley in double digits were rookies Sam McKenna and Leilani McClellan. McKenna poured in a season-high 24 points and shot 5-for-11 from three-point range while McClellan finished with 10 points and five boards.
Amanda Ortiz paced Lasell (4-3 overall) with 25 points.
Mitchell trailed 51-39 at intermission but made up the difference with a strong third quarter. Wiley and McKenna each supplied seven points in the stanza as the Mariners erased the deficit and pulled in front with 54 seconds remaining in the period.
The fourth quarter was tight, with neither side owning a lead of more than three over the final 10 minutes. The Mariners led by one in the final moments when Ortiz was fouled with 5.3 seconds left. With the chance to put the Lasers in front, Ortiz made only one of two at the line to tie the game at 75-75.
After a Mitchell timeout advanced the ball to midcourt, the Mariners once again went to Wiley for the final shot. She crashed the lane and was fouled while making the basket, although she missed the ensuing free throw. Lasell grabbed the rebound but turned the ball over before getting off a shot, and Mitchell walked away with its first non-conference road win of the year.
Mitchell will next play at Anna Maria College on Saturday, December 7 at 1 p.m.
