CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered a 95-48 setback at Elms College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Picknelly Arena.
The Blazers (11-6 overall, 9-1 NECC) shot 49 percent from the field and went 23-for-34 at the free throw line as six players finished in double figures. Denisha Parks led the way with 27 points on 12-for-21 shooting and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Diamond Thomas paced the Mariners (5-11 overall, 5-5 NECC) with 13 points and added four steals.
Thomas scored a pair of baskets in the opening minutes to give Mitchell an early lead, but the offense quickly went stagnant. The Mariners went without a field goal for a near nine-minute stretch, during which Elms took the lead behind a 23-1 run.
Mitchell's first 10 points of the game came from Thomas, but the slow start was too much to overcome. The Mariners trailed 45-21 at the break, and Elms continued to pour it on in the second half.
Mitchell will next host Bay Path University on Tuesday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m.
