
Second Half Slump Costs Women’s Basketball against Colby-Sawyer
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team was outscored 39-28 in the second half and eventually fell to Colby-Sawyer College 70-59 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Junior guard Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) led the Mariners with 17 points, including a 3-6 mark from beyond the arc. Freshman Jordyn Streitmatter added 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while freshman N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX) finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) chipped in nine points off the bench.
After the two teams traded punches across the opening two quarters, the score was tied 31-31 at halftime. Colby-Sawyer's Catherine Chick kicked off the third frame with a layup on the opening possession, and the Chargers would control the quarter, outscoring Mitchell 25-13 to gain control of the game. The Colby-Sawyer lead grew as large as 18 over the last 10 minutes of play, as Marissa Holt poured in seven of her game-high 20 in the final stanza to seal the win for the visiting team.
Elyza Mitchell joined Holt in double figures with 16 points and nine rebounds, as did Chick (15 points, seven rebounds) and Hayden Wilkins (11 points, seven rebounds).
Both teams shot under 40% from the floor, and Mitchell outshot the Chargers from downtown, 33.3% to 29.4%. Colby-Sawyer used their size advantage to win the rebounding battle, 36-32, and forced 18 Mitchell turnovers.
The Mariners (2-12, 0-8 GNAC) travel to face GNAC foe Anna Maria College in their next game on Tuesday, February 4, at 7:00 pm. The Chargers (9-11, 3-6 GNAC) return to the court at Anna Maria College on Saturday, February 8.
