Women’s Volleyball Can't Slow Emmanuel
BOSTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on Thursday night, falling 3–1 (15-25, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25) to conference-leading Emmanuel College at the Jean Yawkey Center.
Sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) led the attack with 10 kills, adding 12 digs and 2 service aces, while fellow sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) notched 11 kills on 39 attempts to go along with a dig and 11 total points.
Setting duties were split between junior Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) and senior Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.), who combined for 24 assists on the night. Veenstra also added 12 digs and a service ace, while Blankenship served up 3 aces and recorded 7 digs of her own. Freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) chipped in with 4 kills, and senior Ali Ortiz (Groton, Conn.) contributed 3 kills and a block assist.
After a slow start in the opening set, Mitchell responded in the second, pulling ahead midway through the frame and holding off a late push from the Saints to take it 25-22. The Mariners hit a match-best .200 in the set while limiting Emmanuel to just a .161 hitting percentage — their lowest of the night.
Emmanuel was led by Letitia Bossou, who collected a match-high 18 kills and posted a .389 hitting percentage. Kason Huynh tallied 30 assists and 11 digs, while Julia Haight added 11 kills and 2 service aces.
The Mariners (7-9, 1-6 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they travel to Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Saturday, October 18, for a tri-match with the host Monks and Husson University.
