NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team came away with a split against SUNY Cobleskill and Suffolk University on Saturday at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners swept SUNY Cobleskill 3-0 to start the day, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-15, and 26-24. The Mariners then dropped a 3-0 decision to Suffolk by finals of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-18.
Mitchell (3-2 overall) will host Dean College on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:00 pm.
Game 1 - Mitchell 3, Cobleskill 0
Olivia DeLoach paced the Mariners with a game-high 14 kills to go along with 10 digs. Molly Steel-Miller added six kills, and Allison Blum had four kills and a team-high 11 digs. Claire Binfield handed out a match high 18 assists and also chipped in seven service aces.
The Mariners found themselves tied at 10 with the Fighting Tigers in the first set, before Binfield served back to back aces which put Mitchell ahead for good. Cobleskill battled back and would trim the deficit to four, but DeLoach delivered two kills in the final couple sets to seal the deal.
After beginning the second set tied 4-4, a service error by the Fighting Tigers put the Mariners ahead. Mitchell would lead the rest of the way, scoring six straight at one point, with DeLoach registering three kills in the span.
The final set was the most competitive of the three. The two teams found themselves tied at 24-24, yet Mitchell once again found a way to pull ahead, as DeLoach notched a kill and Binfield served an ace to end it.
Game 2 - Suffolk 3, Mitchell 0
DeLoach and Sarah Aviles had four kills each to lead the Mariners, who trailed the entire first set.
The second set was back and forth, and the two teams were tied at 16-16, before Grace Cervenka tallied three kills to spearhead a 4-0 Rams run, and the visitors never looked back. Suffolk went up early again in the third game, turning a 12-10 lead into an 18-12 advantage. Mitchell battled to cut the score to 22-18, however the Rams answered with three straight to take the victory.
Cervenka led Suffolk with 11 kills, while Harmoney Johnson had a team-high 12 assists, and Kenzley Bell a game-best 16 digs.
