Volleyball Falls to Lasell, Mount Ida
NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell College women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday, picking up a 3-0 victory over Mitchell College in its opening match, followed by a 3-1 win against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Mount Ida College. Mount Ida defeated Mitchell College 3-1 in the middle match of the day.
Lasell improved to 5-12 overall with the victories and with the defeat of the Mustangs the Lasers stand at 1-0 in league play. Mount Ida slipped to 5-8 on the year and 0-1 in the GNAC, while Mitchell slid to 2-6 on the season.
Match 1: Lasell 3, Mitchell 0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-11)
Olivia Addington led the Lasers with nine kills while Heather Longley chipped in with eight. Taylor Tiezzi assisted Lasell 22 times during the win and Caitlyn Garcia recorded 10 digs.
Lasell controlled the first set with a score of 25-13 and opened the second trading points until the Mariners went on a 10-2 spurt making the score 16-12. The Lasers rallied back with five straight points to take control and concluded the set with a 4-1 run.
The Mariners never had a chance to take the lead in the final set as Longley provided the spark for the Lasers tallying five of her eight kills. Sharisse Scott-Rawlins closed the match with four straight service aces handing the Lasers the win 25-11.
Emily Stracuzzi finished the match with three kills while Italia Krick, Amanda Garcia and Kaisea Caramante each added two. Caramante also led the defense with 13 digs while Stracuzzi contributed 12.
Match 2: Mount Ida 3, Mitchell 1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-16)
Mary Kate Reidy led the way for the Mustangs with 17 kills while Molly Alkinburg added nine kills and hit .368 for the match. Kristy Walton put together a solid all-around performance for Mount Ida, finishing with five kills, five service aces and 12 digs, and Kelcey Koolman notched a team-high 14 digs.
Junior Amanda Rowan and Garcia paced the Mitchell attack with nine and eight kills respectively, while senior Nicole Caminiti added a match-best 22 assists and 14 digs for the Mariners.
Match 3: Lasell 3, Mount Ida 0 (25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17)
Lasell saw three players reach double-digit kills in the final match of the afternoon, as Odina Ellis tallied 12, and Sharisse Scott-Rawlins and Olivia Addington each chipped in with 10 apiece. Taylor Tiezzi directed the Lasell attack, collecting 33 assists while Caitlyn Garcia notched a match-high 21 digs.
Mount Ida was paced by Mary Kate Reidy who finished with nine kills, Alysha Dunbar who added 13 assists and five service aces with Kelcey Koolman anchoring the Mustangs defense with 20 digs.
Mount Ida will take on Lesley on Monday, September 28 in a non-conference home match at 6:00 p.m. Mitchell will visit Trinity College on Tuesday September 29 at 7:00 p.m. The Lasers return to the hardwood when they host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a non-league tilt on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m.
