NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team was swept in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on Saturday at the Yarnall Athletic Center, suffering straight set losses to Emmanuel College and Saint Joseph's College (ME).
Mitchell, who entered the day on a two-game winning streak, lost by set scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-12 against the Saints, while the Monks took three sets in a row by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-23.
Facing the Saints, it was freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) who led the Mitchell offense with five kills, while fellow freshman Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) and senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) tallied four kills apiece. Junior libero Julia lent recorded 20 defensive digs for the Mariners, while sophomore Kiersten Veenstra handed out 13 assists.
Isabella Marquez delivered a match-high 13 kills across the three sets for the Saints, while Paula Tanguilig had 17 digs, and Kason Huynh was credit with 30 assists.
Wordell continued her strong day for the Mariners in the final game of the afternoon, notching seven kills on a .278 hitting percentage against the Monks. Julia Lent once again had double-digit digs, finishing with 14, while Veenstra dished out 18 assists.
Greta MacKintosh had 12 kills with a .364 hitting percentage to lead SJC. Jessica Christman and Sabrina Arcilla each had 12 digs in the win, and Tamya Johnson had 18 assists.
The Mariners (8-16, 4-9 GNAC) close out their regular season with another home GNAC tri-match on Saturday, November 9, hosting Albertus Magnus College and Johnson & Wales University.
