Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Newbury College women's volleyball team shut out New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Mitchell College, 3-0, Tuesday evening.
Newbury outside hitter Jessy Touron was one kill shy of a double-double as she paved the way to victory, notching nine kills on 20 attempts for a .400 attack percentage and 15 defensive digs.
Mitchell came out of the gate strong, leading by as many as seven midway through the first set. The Nighthawks refused to back down, however, going on a 5-0 run to knot up the contest at 21-21. After junior middle hitter Gloria Charles regained the lead for the Mariners twice late in the set with two kills, Sara Hanna tied up the game once again and ultimately led to Sarah Young's service ace to end the game at 25-23.
There was no looking back for the Nighthawks as Hanna remained red-hot in the second set, registering four kills on seven attempts for an outstanding .429 attack percentage to lead the Nighthawks to the decisive 25-19 victory. The Long Island native finished the evening with a match-high nine kills, tying her with Touron and the Mariners' Charles.
In the third and final set of the night, middle hitter Sydney Fish came on strong tallying a set-high four kills in a 25-17 game three victory to seal the match for the Nighthawks. Fish finished the day notching six kills with two block assists while classmate Lauren Watson added three block assists in the victory.
Despite the loss, Charles finished the night with nine kills for the Mariners while first-year middle hitter Amanda Garcia followed up with six kills of her own. Senior Arianna Thomas notched 14 digs while sophomore Jaclyn Tempkins added 11 digs.
Newbury improved to 10-14 and 4-1 in conference action while Mitchell fell to .500 in the conference and 6-10 overall.
Mitchell will next host Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.
