Men’s Basketball Sprints Past MCLA
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team responded to suffering their first loss of the season in commanding fashion on Saturday afternoon, routing the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) 96-54 in their final game of the Cadet-Mariner Classic hosted by Coast Guard Academy at Roland Hall Gymnasium.
A day after shooting just 34.8% from the floor, the Mariners offense was humming on Saturday, as the team shot at a 52.1% clip and were led by junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.), who finished with a game-high 20 points on 8-12 shooting. Volkerts, who was one of four Mitchell players to score in double-figures, added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while senior Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) and freshman Adrian Alicea (Miami, Fla.) netted 13 points apiece. Junior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Cali.) chipped in 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists in the win, as 14 different players scored for Mitchell.
The two squads played close early, feeling each other out and trading baskets. With the score tied 9-9, Brandon Lee converted on a layup with 16:41 left in the first half, and from there the Mariners were off and running, building a 54-16 lead at halftime and leading by as much as 47 in the second stanza.
The Mariners outrebounded the Trailblazers 41-32, forced 22 MCLA turnovers, and received 52 points from their bench.
Jackson Brown, Jha-Barrie Portis, JoJo Garcia, and Miles Sales each had seven points for MCLA in the loss.
The Mariners (5-1, 0-0 GNAC) will return to Roland Hall for their next game on Tuesday, November 26, when they face Coast Guard Academy at 3:00 pm. The Trailblazers (0-7, 0-0 MASCAC) play next at home on Tuesday, November 26, when they host Williams College.
