NEW YORK -- The City College of New York men's basketball team lost to visiting Mitchell College, 98-86, on Thursday night at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Mitchell senior Joshua Ford had a dominating performance with a game-high 33 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals, all while making 13 of his 17 shots. Sophomore Frank Martin contributed 16 points on only six shots while also tallying five assists and three steals. Senior Alex Del Rio Jr. had 13 points and a team-high eight assists and sophomore Devonta Mosley came off the bench to record his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 boards.
Anthony Lewis led CCNY with 25 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Khalil Hamer came off the bench to score 19 points while pulling down seven boards and coming away with three takeaways. Jordan Ortega overcame flu-like symptoms to contribute 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds to go with four steals. Che McCoy dished out a career-best nine assists with five rebounds, Nathan Lopez had nine points off the bench and Lareik Taylor added eight.
CCNY was in the lead for much of the first half before Mitchell ended the period on a 12-2 run, taking a 49-42 advantage into the half. The Mariners started quickly in the second half, expanding the margin to 15 points and holding onto their edge for the remainder of the game.
The Mariners shot an incredible 64 percent from the floor while 6-for-13 from three-point range. Freshman Wyatt Springer chipped in with nine points off the bench on 4-for-5 shooting while classmate Marcus Vereen contributed five points.
Mitchell (5-3 overall) enters the winter break on a three-game winning streak. The Mariners will return to the court on Tuesday, January 7 at home against Daniel Webster College.
