MBB Picks Up Road Win at DWC
NASHUA, N.H. – Senior Joshua Ford notched a double-double with game highs of 21 points and 19 rebounds to lead Mitchell College past Daniel Webster College, 85-66, in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up Thursday at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Ford chipped in with five assists and two steals while sophomore Frank Martin scored 19 points and junior Parris Hill notched 18 as the Mariners remained alone in first place in the NECC. Mitchell improved to 14-4 overall (10-1 NECC) and won for the 12th time in its last 13 outings.
Daris Cosby led the Eagles (12-6 overall, 5-4 NECC) with 20 points while Kevin Perez notched 13 with four steals. Ray Farmer just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine boards and Khial Watson added seven points off the bench.
Mitchell never trailed after the midpoint of the first half, although the Eagles stayed close and trailed by three (33-30) at the break. But the Mariners put together a 10-2 run early in the second stanza--keyed by two Ford jumpers and a Hill inside move--to turn a 37-32 lead into a 47-34 advantage with 16:23 remaining.
Twice DWC got the deficit down to two possessions, the second coming on a Farmer lay-up that pulled the Eagles to within six at 58-52 with 6:31 left. But junior Alex Pires came off the bench to knock down the first of two key three-pointers to get the lead back to nine, and Martin buried another from outside with 5:47 left. Ford later converted inside with 4:49 to go as part of an 11-1 run that pushed the lead to 16, and DWC came no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Mitchell outrebounded the hosts 46-30 and outscored the Eagles 19-4 on second chance points, helping to negate DWC's 38-34 scoring advantage in the paint. Both teams shot 40 percent in the first half, but Mitchell connected for 56 percent in the second while DWC dipped to 39 percent. The Mariners outscored DWC 52-36 in the second frame.
Ford tied his career high with the 19 rebounds and grabbed seven alone on the offensive end. The double-double was his 17th of the season.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, February 1 at 1:00 p.m.
