MBB Cruises to Victory at Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team bounced back with an 86-60 road win at Newbury College on Wednesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.
Senior forward Parris Hill shot 63 percent from the field and netted a team-high 26 points as the Mariners evened their NECC record to 6-6. Classmate Joshua Ford chipped in with 20 points and 12 rebounds while junior Donavan McClean added 19 points.
After a slow offensive start, the Mariners set the tone with an 11-4 run over a three-minute stretch that was sparked by junior guard Frank Martin's three assists. Throughout the majority of the first half, Mitchell took advantage of its size advantage and outscored the Nighthawks 18-10 on second-chance points. Ford dominated the front court and registered a double-double in the first half with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Midway through the stanza, after Newbury's Cameron Owen picked up his second personal foul, Ahmed Ismail Ahmed entered the game and kept the two Mitchell big men at bay. Ahmed pulled down five boards and rejected one shot in 13 minutes of action in the first half, but it still wasn't enough as the Mariners took a 20-point lead (45-25) into the break.
Mitchell never let the lead dip below 20 points in the second half. Wth just under nine minutes remaining in the contest, Hill gave the Mariners their largest lead at 75-46 by draining a mid-range jumper.
Despite the lopsided score, Ahmed finished with a career-high nine rebounds to go along with six points. Thompson led all scorers with 27 points while Mills Carrasco netted 10. Ceejae Carter came off the bench to round out the Nighthawks in double figures with 10 points of his own.
Newbury fell to 3-18 overall and 2-10 in NECC action while Mitchell improved to 9-11 and 6-6 in conference play.
Mitchell returns to action on Saturday, February 14 at Lesley University. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
