Last Second Shot by Volkerts Lifts Men's Basketball Past Anna Maria
PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.) beat his defender, drove to the hoop, and sank a layup as time expired, lifting the Mitchell College men's basketball team over Anna Maria College in overtime, 88-86, on Tuesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash at the Fuller Actives Center.
With the Mariners leading by one late in overtime, Anna Maria's Gabriel Armstead drove and made a layup, knotting the score at 86-86 with 24 seconds remaining.
Freshman Tommy Daly (Wethersfield, Conn.) then took the inbound and walked it up the court before passing it to Abdul Mansaray (Orlando, Fla.) at the top of the key. The freshman proceeded to fead it to Volkerts with 12 seconds on the clock, and the junior darted to the hoop after rendering his defender off-balance, converting the layup to give Mitchell the win.
Volkerts poured in 29 points on 12-18 shooting. He added 12 rebounds to record his eighth double-double of the season, while adding three steals and a pair of assists. Senior Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) chipped in 19 points, while Mansaray notched the first double-double of his Mitchell career, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Freshman Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) added 11 points off the bench, marking the second consecutive game that the first year guard has finished in double-figures scoring.
Ray Carter led all Anna Maria players with 22 points. Gabriel Armstead's 18 point, 11 rebound double-double helped the AMCATS, while Jayden Dickeron (13 points) and Sean Zabari (10 points) also finished in double-figures scoring for the home squad.
The game marked the sixth time this season in which the Mariners shot over 50% from the field (52.2%), and the 88 points scored was tied for their third most all season.
The Mariners (13-7, 5-4 GNAC) will look for their third straight win when they return to their home court and host GNAC foe New England College on Saturday, February 8, at 1:00 pm. The AMCATS (8-13, 5-5 GNAC) also play next on Saturday, February 8, and will try to snap a two game skid when they host Colby-Sawyer College.
