MBB Wins Third Straight at SUNY Maritime
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team picked up its third-straight road win on Tuesday night, besting SUNY Maritime by an 85-71 final in non-conference action at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Mitchell scored the game's first basket and never trailed, evening its record at 8-8 overall. Alfonzo Stokes recorded career highs of 31 points and 11 rebounds to notch his first career double-double. He shot 12-for-15 from the floor while going 7-for-10 from the free throw line.
Mikey Buscetto and Jalen Benson also scored in double digits. Buscetto finished with 13 points to go with six assists and six steals, and Benson added 11 points and six assists.
The Mariners opened the contest with six straight points and led by double digits after just six minutes. Mitchell extended the lead to as many as 14 points before settling in with a 44-32 lead at the break. Both Stokes (12) and Benson (10) reached double digits before intermission.
Mitchell played with a double-digit lead for most of the second half, although the Privateers did get as close as six down the stretch. A late 9-0 run by the Mariners cemented the victory, with Buscetto supplying a pair of baskets during the spurt.
Stokes netted 19 of his 31 points in the second half. It marked Mitchell's second consecutive game with a 30-point scorer, as Buscetto netted 32 in the win at New England College.
Maritime (3-12 overall) was paced by Ryan Donovan's 22 points. The Privateers shot 51 percent for the game but turned the ball over 27 times.
Mitchell will next host Lesley University on Thursday, January 27 at 6 p.m.
