Men’s Basketball Falls to Crosstown Rival Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team suffered their second loss of the young season on Tuesday afternoon, falling 109-99 to crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy in a non-conference clash at Roland Hall.
Senior Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) poured in a game-high 31 points on 11-18 shooting in the loss. Clardy added 11 rebounds to register his second double-double of the season. Fellow senior Wilton Causey (Worcester, Mass.) netted a season-high 21 points on 10-12 from the floor, while junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.) finished with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
The Bears carried a one-point advantage into halftime, and the back and forth game continued into the second stanza. The contest remained neck and neck, as junior Walker Baillargeon (Norwich, Conn.) knotted the score at 69-69 with a layup at the 10:33 mark. Declan Rooney answered right back for the Bears, knocking down a jumper seven seconds later, and from there CGA held the lead, maintaining their slim advantage over the Mariners.
Rooney paced five CGA players to finish in double-figures, recording in 29 points on 11-16 shooting, to go along with five assists.
The Mariners (5-2, 0-0 GNAC) will pause briefly for the Thanksgiving holiday, before returning to their home court for a non-conference game against Purchase College on Wednesday, December 4, at 6:00 pm. The Bears (3-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) also return to action on Wednesday, December 4, when they host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
