
MBB Wins 10th Consecutive Game, Remain Undefeated in Conference
The Mitchell College men's basketball team reached 20 wins for the first time in the programs Division III era on Saturday afternoon, beating Lesley University 115-69 in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup at Medford High School. The Mariners 10 game winning streak is also the longest in the Division III era, as Mitchell has now not dropped a game since losing to Wesleyan University on January 11th.
The Lynx scored the first points of the game on free throws by Hezekiah Brown. Ahmani Browne (St. John's, Antigua) answered with a jumper, and the Mariners didn't look back, leading the rest of the way.
Mitchell shot 65.7% from the floor and made 10 three pointers. Seniors Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Jalen Benson (New London, Conn.) accounted for six of the threes, with Stokes going a perfect 4-4 from downtown and Benson finished 2-2 from long range.
The Mariners also outrebounded Lesley 49-18, handed out 29 assists to just 10 for the home squad, and received 48 points from their bench.
Stokes poured in a season-high 34 points on 14-17 shooting and also added seven rebounds and four assists. Benson early missed a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assist. Wilton Causey (Worcester, Mass.) came off the bench to score 14 points and grab five rebounds, while Ahmani Browne (St. John's, Antigua) had 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Mikey Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) added six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals in the win.
Christian Castro paced Lesley with 18 points, while Taaj Thomas scored 13.
The Mariners (20-3 overall, 5-0 NECC) will look to make it 11 wins in a row when they travel to Westfield State on Wednesday, February 15h, at 7:00 pm. Lesley returns to action on Tuesday, February 14th, when they host Eastern Nazarene College.
