Five Finish in Double-Figures, as Men’s Basketball Tames Bulldogs
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Five players scored in double-figures for the Mitchell College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Mariners cruised past Dean College 88-64 in a non-conference game at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.) led the way, scoring a game-high 18 points on 6-12 shooting, while adding 13 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season. Senior guard Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) was right behind him, finishing with 14 points, six steals, five rebounds, and two blocks.
Junior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Cali.) netted 11 points and added eight rebounds, five assists, and four blocks, while freshman Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Walker Baillargeon (Norwich, Conn.) chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively off the bench. The 12 for Jefferson, which included a 4-5 mark from downtown, and the 11 for Baillargeon were both season-high figures for each player.
The Mariners got the scoring started when Clardy knocked down a jumper just over a minute into the game and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire. Mitchell held a 40-28 advantage at halftime and saw their lead grow as large as 27 down the stretch. Despite shooting just 41.6% from the floor, the Mariners won the rebounding battle, 46-44, forced 24 turnovers by the Bulldogs, and outscored Dean 38-34 in the paint.
Ja'maine Davenport finished with 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench to lead the Bulldogs, while Billy Ray Barnes had 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Having already matched last season's win total, the Mariners (7-2, 0-0 GNAC) will look to make it three straight wins when they visit crosstown rival Connecticut College on Monday, December 9, at 7:00 pm. The Bulldogs (8-2, 0-0 GNAC) return to the court on Saturday, January 4, when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at Regis College.
