NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team dropped an 83-62 final to Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Conn (4-5 overall) shot 52 percent from the floor and owned a 45-28 advantage on the glass. Jarron Flynn led all players with 18 points while Billy Whelan came off the bench to chip in 17. Ben Rice recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while Cam Schainfeld rounded out the Camels in double figures with 10 points.
Playing without its top three scorers, Mitchell shot 40 percent as a team was led by Dontae Pollard's 14 points. Jacob Narvaez and Hunter Baillargeon contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Mariners grabbed the lead on their first possession of the game as Pollard knocked down a jumper to get things started. Jalen Benson followed with a layup, and Narvaez quickly added a pair of baskets for an 8-4 advantage.
After Benson picked up his second foul and was forced to sit just five minutes in, the Camels ripped off an 8-0 run to vault into the lead. Maxwell Gayle countered with a pair of buckets for the Mariners, but Conn responded with the next seven points to build a 22-13 lead with 11:03 remaining in the half.
Conn stretched the lead to 39-27 by the break. Flynn netted 14 points in the first half to pace the Camels.
Mitchell kept within striking distance early in the second, whittling the deficit to five following a layup by Narvaez at the 16:32 mark. However, Conn quickly built the lead back to double digits, and the Camels went on to lead by as many as 21 before the final whistle.
Mitchell (3-6 overall) will next play at Lehman College on Tuesday, December 14 at 4:45 p.m.
