
Late Push Propels Trinity Past MBB
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team couldn't hold off a late push by Trinity College on Tuesday night, falling 86-72 in non-conference action at Oosting Gymnasium.
The Bantams, who trailed for a majority of the contest, outscored the Mariners 25-2 over the final 7:13 of the contest, including 17 straight points to end the game. Donald Jorden led all scorers with 23 points while Ben Callahan contributed 20.
Four Mariners scored in double digits led by 21 points from Mikey Buscetto. Alfonzo Stokes and Jacob Narvaez added 15 points apiece while Robert Zirlis chipped in 12.
The Mariners played a solid first half, shooting 56 percent as a team en route to a 46-40 lead at the break. Buscetto hit four three-pointers and tallied 16 points in the opening half to lead the charge, and Zirlis shot 5-for-6 to add 10 points.
Mitchell continued to play from out in front in the second half, expanding the lead to as many as nine. After Trinity fought back to within three, Stokes scored six points in a 30-second span to pad the margin back to nine at 70-61 with 8:08 remaining.
From that point on it was all Trinity. The Bantams narrowed the gap with eight straight points before Narvaez answered with a layup to keep the Mariners on top at 72-69. Two minutes later, a pair of free throws by Callahan gave Trinity its first lead since the 15:15 mark of the first half.
Mitchell went 0-for-7 to end the game while Trinity sealed the win by going 8-for-8 at the free throw line.
Mitchell (5-8 overall) will next play at Purchase College on Tuesday, January 18.
