Men's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Tilt at Conn College
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's basketball team
cruised to an 86-67 victory against Mitchell College in a
cross-town matchup between New London schools played at Luce
Fieldhouse Monday night.
The Camels (7-8 overall) shot a scorching 57 percent from
three-point range (12-for-21) and 62 percent from the field
(29-for-47), outrebounding the Mariners (2-10 overall) 34-23 in the
triumph. Brian Mahoney poured in 13 of his team-high 16 points in
the second half, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from long distance and
4-for-4 at the charity stripe. Dean Lampe contributed 13 points,
six rebounds and four assists on 5-for-8 shooting from the field.
Chris Kehoe added 11 points and four rebounds, connecting on all
five of his field goal attempts for the Camels.
Senior Eric
Murray paced the visitors with 16 points and five rebounds
while classmate Mike DePaolo had 12
points and three steals for the Mariners. Sophomore John Patterson
added 10 points and shot 5-of-7 from the field.
The Camels put together a 9-2 run midway through the opening half
to take a 25-15 lead. McGuinness knocked down a pair of jumpers
during the stretch, including a 17-footer to close out the rally
with 8:54 remaining.
Later on in the half, the Camels frustrated the Mariners with a
14-5 run. Bernier drove the baseline for a hoop with 3:31 to go. On
the ensuing Mariners possession, Bernier got his hands in a passing
lane and went from one end to the other, burying a three from the
top of the key in transition. The 177th triple of his career
vaulted the Camels out to their largest lead of the half at 39-24.
The Camels carried a 42-28 advantage into the break.
The Camels continued to carry the hot-hand in the second stanza.
With 17:25 remaining, Lampe knocked down a trey to make it a 51-32
score. However, Drew Norris reduced the
deficit to 59-48 with 9:57 remaining, knocking down a three-point
field goal for a resilient Mitchell squad. But Mahoney ignited the
Camels on a lethal 8-0 scoring surge late in the half that put the
game out of reach, burying a three with 6:11 to go that staked the
Camels to their largest lead, a 71-51 advantage.
Mitchell returns to action on Thursday, January 21 against Elms
College at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Tip-off is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
