NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- The Mitchell College men's basketball team connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers in a 78-70 victory over Johnson & Wales University (FL) on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Wildcat Center.
Hasani Williams led a balanced attack for the Mariners with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Steffen Brunson added 11 points and six rebounds while Vince Ventulan came off the bench to contribute season highs of 10 points and seven assists. JWU's Dwayne Adams led all scorers with 24 points.
Mitchell scored nine of its 13 first-half field goals from beyond the arc but trailed 39-37 at the break. Matt Finke netted all nine of his points in the stanza, all from deep.
The Wildcats led by as many as seven in the second half and went up 57-51 following a three-pointer by Jacknelson Joseph with 8:54 remaining. The Mariners responded with a 17-0 run to vault into the lead for good, with Ventulan supplying a pair of threes and eight points during the stretch. Williams also contributed three buckets and was a force on the defensive glass. Mitchell held JWU without a field goal for over eight minutes, until Adams finally broke the drought with a layup with under a minute to go.
Mitchell (6-4 overall) will next play at Newbury College on Saturday, January 5 at 1 p.m.
