MBB Roll Over NEC in Conference Showdown
HENNIKER, N.H. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team picked up their third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, rolling over New England College 78-52 in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at the Bridges Gymnasium.
Senior Alfonzo Stokes (Bloomfield, Conn.) led the charge, pouring in a game-high 29 points on 54% shooting for the Mariners, who improved to 13-3 overall and remained unbeaten this season in conference play. Stokes, who also grabbed five rebounds, was joined in double-figures by Jalen Benson, as the senior guard finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Jacob Narvaez (Miramar, Fla.) came down with a season-best nine rebounds in the win and Dontae Pollard (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) had another strong game off the bench, scoring eight points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Both teams traded baskets early, as the Mariners maintained a consistent lead throughout the first half yet went to the locker room leading by just five points. A 10-2 run to begin the second half gave Mitchell the boost they needed and allowed them to begin building an advantage that grew as large as 28 points down the stretch.
The Mariners shot 43.2% from the floor and limited the Pilgrims to just 36.5% shooting. Mitchell was stellar from the free throw line, making 6-7 shots from the stripe, while outrebounding New England College 50-31. The Mariners also dished out 22 assists to just 11 by the Pilgrims and forced 22 turnovers, which in turn led to 24 points off turnovers.
Jasen Stovall was the lone player for New England College to register double-digit points with 10, and Kyle Inglis had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
The Mariners (13-3 overall, 2-0 NECC) return to play on Monday, January 23rd, when they host Fitchburg State at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Losers of eight in a row, New England College (2-15 overall, 0-2 NECC) host Vermont Tech on Wednesday, January 25th.
