
Men's Basketball Wins Jim Beaudry Classic
BIDDEFORD, ME – The Mitchell College men's basketball team ran their record to 3-0 to begin the season after downing Maine Maritime Academy 82-75 inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Sunday afternoon to win the Jim Beaudry Classic tournament, hosted by the University of New England.
This marks the first time since the 2012-13 season in which the Mariners have begun a season with three consecutive wins.
Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) continued his blistering start to the season, finishing with 30 points on 70.6% shooting (12-17), to go along with nine rebounds and two steals for Mitchell. The senior is now averaging 29 points and 7.7 rebounds, while shooting 56.9% from the floor through the first three games of the season
For his performance, Clardy was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
Junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.) filled the stat sheet to the tune of 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while fellow junior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Cali.) recorded 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior Wilton Causey (Worcester, Mass.) netted 10 points, grabbed six boards, and dished three assists to round out the double-figure scorers for the Mariners.
The Mariners broke the ice with a Jaylyn Clardy jumper 13 seconds into the game and never looked back, leading wire to wire. Mitchell held a 37-29 advantage at halftime, and led by as much as 13 down the stretch. Mitchell shot 50.7% from the floor, outrebounded Maine Maritime 37-32, and forced 10 turnovers.
Markus Ramirez scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting to lead Maine Maritime.
The Mariners (3-0, 0-0 GNAC) will host Anna Maria College in their home opener on Tuesday, November 19, at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Maine Maritime (3-1, 0-0 NAC) play next on Tuesday, November 26, at Bowdoin College.
