Men’s Basketball Falls to Crosstown Rival Camels
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on Monday night, dropping a 76-64 decision to crosstown rival Connecticut College in a non-conference clash at the Luce Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) led the Mariners offensive attack with 17 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Brandon Lee (Stockton, Cali.) netted 13 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor. Lee added nine rebounds for Mitchell, while senior big man Wilton Causey (Worcester, Mass.) finished with 11 points and six rebounds. The freshman duo of Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) and Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) chipped in eight points apiece of the bench.
The Mariners built an early advantage over the Camels and led by as many as eight points midway through the first half. Conn battled back, however, and carried a four-point edge into the locker room at the intermission. The Mariners were unable to catch up to Conn in the second half, as the Camels built a 16 point lead before closing the game to notch their fifth victory of the season.
Cam Schainfled led all scorers with 24 points. The senior shot 72.7% from the floor, while Garrett Clar scored 15 and Andrew Hartel added 14 in the Camels fifth win of the season.
The Mariners (7-3, 0-0 GNAC) will look to close the semester on a high note when they travel to play Johnson & Wales University in non-league action on Thursday, December 12, at 7:00 pm. The Camels (5-4, 0-0 NESCAC) will return to the court on Thursday, December 19, when they square off against Rhode Island College.
