Men's Hoops Earns Road Win at Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Mitchell College men's basketball team
picked up its first conference road win of the season on Saturday
afternoon by a 63-62 final over Newbury College.
Sophomore Julio
Contreras paved the way to victory for the Mariners (3-15
overall, 2-7 NECC) with a team-high 15 points and seven assists.
Senior Mike
DePaolo and junior Drew Norris also scored
in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Mitchell jumped out to an early lead before Timothy
Young and Chris Torres helped bring the Nighthawks back. Young
drained four treys in the first half for 16 of his game-high 21
points while Torres added 10 points of his own. Still, the Mariners
took a 39-32 lead into the locker room at the break.
Mitchell led for the majority of the second half, though Newbury
(5-15 overall, 3-6 NECC) mounted a valiant come-back behind
the play of Rondell Best, who scored 10 of his 14 points in
the stanza. The Nighthawks took their first lead of the half
on a layup by Torres with 3:06 to play, but the
Mariners answered right back behind a pair of DePaolo
free throws. After Newbury pulled ahead by two on
a three-point play by Paul Beckford, DePaolo put the
Mariners in front for good with a trey with under a minute
to go.
The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Mariners, who split
the regular season series against Newbury. Mitchell is now tied for
seventh place in the NECC standings and trails Newbury by one game
for the final spot in the upcoming conference championship.
Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Thursday, February 11
at 7 p.m.
